MARIA DOYLE KENNEDY (IRE)

PRESSE / PRAISE

"...one of the finest voices this country has ever produced...Ireland’s National Treasure" – HOT PRESS

"An astounding voice" – DAILY MAIL

"Jaw-droppingly beautiful" – R2 MAGAZINE

"MDK yet again proves that she’s the elastagirl of rock music" – RTE GUIDE

"...delivers every song with such feeling and emotion that it really gets under your skin and carries the listener away..."
– FEMALE FIRST

"Every now and then I hear a song that stops me dead in my tracks. Unwittingly I tense up my shoulders and it’s only when it’s over I realise that I’ve also been holding my breath. ‘Yes We Will’ is a song on Maria Doyle Kennedy’s album Sing – in fact it’s a duet with no less than John Prine – and it is one of those breathtaking musical moments."  – THE SOUTHERN STAR

"The Kennedy voice is a persuasive weapon" – MOJO

*****

And...for our very last shows - not just of the season but in the Parterre venue as we all know it; Before the walls crumble, the stage dissolves, before the ceiling blasts open, and we close for a half year of substantial renovations: What could be more appropriate than inviting one of our longest visiting artists to - quite literally - "bring the house down".  The award-winning singer and actress has sung with John Prine, Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Snow Patrol, and can be seen in  Orphan Black, The Tudors and Downton Abbey.  Her voice takes you places; you might need a map back!

Maria Doyle Kennedy is an Irish singer, actor and filmmaker. Together with her husband Kieran Kennedy she runs a small independent record label (Mermaid Records) and they have released 6 albums to date, the most recent release being a live album called MARIA LIVE.

She has collaborated with John Prine, Damien Rice and Paul Brady. In May Maria featured on the album Printer Clips with Paul Noonan, Joan As Policewoman, Martha Wainwright and Lisa Hannigan amongst others. Recent acting credits include Orphan Black (for which she won a Canadian Screen Award 2014) and the latest Wachowski’s movie Jupiter Ascending.

Maria finished a run of sold out shows in Europe and USA this spring and now lives in Toronto Canada where a new album is being made.

She is a great believer in doing things (rather than just talking about doing them).

She loves crisps.

MARIA IN HER OWN WORDS

“The first thing I heard that caught hold of me was a Billie Holiday album I was given as a present when I was 14. This wasn't sing-a-long-a-radio kind of sound, it was something deep and primal and sometimes almost unbearably sad.  I had no idea a voice could do that, affect me (or anyone) in that way. It opened the door to an avalanche of life-changing music. Patti Smith came later, Radiohead and Low my favourites still, in the band department.

My home wasn't really musical except that whenever there were parties or any kind of gathering of my parent's friends , there would come a time in the evening when they would sit around and sing....everyone had a party piece, it was an education to listen to them.

My earliest musical influences are Billie Holiday, Patti Smith, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, The Wizard of Oz film and episodes of Wonderwoman.

My favourite musical Irish artists past and present are Margaret Barry, Planxty, Donal Lunny, Dolores Keane, The Sultans of Ping FC, Stump, Grand, Nanu Nanu, Come On Live Long and Cat Dowling. I won't include the painters and writers although they are every bit as dear to, and influential on me.

There were 2 reasons really to start my own label Mermaid Records, I did want to have control over what I was making and to survive or fail by my own hand, and not because of some political fallout within a corporately structured label...........but to be honest I don't really think there was any other option. I was in my mid 30's, no-one was going to sign me, it was do it myself or fuck off back to singing songs in my head all day long.

I look at and listen to people all day long. We are the most fascinating and cracked creatures. How we combine, how we spill apart, the endless tragi-comedy of humanity, I will never tire of it. I write songs to try to explain the world to myself, I haven't got very far.

I have to collaborate, I don't play any instument very well, I'm lucky enough to be mostly able to make music with Kieran (Kennedy) who, through a frame of more than 25 years of shared references, can read my mind, and also happens to be a multi-instumentalist genius. Happy out.

On my album Sing I collaborated with Damien Rice, John Prine and Paul Brady.

John Prine is a ball of grace on legs and I still can't believe he agreed to sing on "Yes We Will"; he said that he loved the song. Damien & Paul are friends of ours, though I knew that both of them are extraordinarily particular about what they contribute to, I felt that they would hear something in the songs we sent them that would interest them in collaborating with us; thankfully they did. It was altogether a brilliant time and I will never forget it or them.

I would give any limb to sing with Mimi Parker (LOW) .......any limb Mimi, if you get this paper in Deluth, U.S. and you're reading...........What a singer she is. Truly a divine thing her voice.

Liz Fraser is one of THE voices of my generation (or ever). The sound she makes one of exquisite beauty.

I absolutely love to play live. It helps me to believe in the world. Every single gig is different (a massive cliché but a true one), I never ever know what to expect from an audience and am constantly surprised as a result. The days are long sometimes with the constant moving . I like to move at a more natural pace where you get a feel for a town or city and it's people, it's hard to do that in a few hours. A good way in I have found, if you only have an hour free, go find the thrift shops in a city. They will never be located on the high-rent boring main shopping areas so you get to see a tiny bit more reality.

I've always fancied playing on a HUGE ship, filled with musicians, on a long and perilous voyage across the Ocean. A bit like the Fellini movie "And the Ship Sails On". I think you'd somehow make your absolutely essential sound on a trip like that."
