Der ungefähr 70-Jährige hat es noch drauf! Das beweist er allabendlich bei seinen vielen Konzerten, einfach die Wucht in Tüten.
Wenn Lee Fields auf die Bühne tritt, ist das wie eine Zeitreise. Nicht viele Soul-Sänger seiner Generation leben noch und gehen noch immer auf Tour. Er hat mit allen Größen von James Brown über B.B. King, Kool and the Gang und Bobby Womack bis Charles Bradley zusammengearbeitet und ist mit Legenden auf Tour gewesen.

Wegen seiner Ähnlichkeit mit dem Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, wurde er Little JB genannt. Er hat den Funk gespielt und den Blues gesungen, er hat House-Tracks mit seiner Stimme veredelt und den Southern Soul groß gemacht. Insbesondere seine Deep-Funk-Platten aus den 70ern haben Maßstäbe gesetzt. Mit Songs wie „Everybody Gonna Give Their Thing Away to Somebody“, „Funky Screw“ oder „The Bull Is Coming“ – wohl dem, der diese Single in seiner Sammlung hat! – hat Lee Fields dem Soul neuen Atem eingehaucht, als er gerade in die Bedeutungslosigkeit zu rutschen drohte. Das wäre ihm dann in den 80ern und 90ern fast passiert, hätte er nicht dem legendären New Yorker Desco Label für etliche denkwürdige Aufnahmen zur Verfügung gestanden. Inzwischen ist er zum Glück wieder auf der Höhe der Zeit und bringt jungen Menschen, die Al Green oder Sam Cooke wenn überhaupt nur als Schmusesänger kennen, einen ganz alten Sound näher. Dabei wird er wieder von fantastischen Musikern unterstützt. Was früher die Devil’s Personal Band für ihn war, sind ihm heute die Expressions: eine Band, die alte Werte und neue Klänge drauf hat, die sich ansatzlos durch einen Abend schlängelt und jederzeit konzentriert dabei ist, die einen treibenden Sound entwickelt und dabei entspannt und knackig gleichzeitig klingt. Lee Fields arbeitet immer noch an neuen Songs und Platten, will aber nichts vom Retro der guten, alten Zeit wissen: Es gehe nicht darum, etwas zu reproduzieren, was es bereits gebe - er und seine Band wollen erneuern, aus dem Kern dessen schöpfen, was den Soul, die Musik heute noch ausmache.

With a career spanning 43 years, releases on twelve different record labels, and having toured the world over with his raucous-yet-tender voice, it is more than mind-blowing that the comeback of Lee Fields has taken all this time. The 68-year-old is still stunning: when he takes the stage, he travels through time with you. The North Carolina native, gone to New York to pursue a music career at the age of 17 with his mother’s last 20 dollars and sometimes nicknamed "Little JB" for his physical and vocal resemblance with James Brown, has worked and toured with great artists such as the Godfather of Soul himself, B.B. King, Kool and the Gang, Bobby Womack and Charles Bradley.

With a catalogue that ranges from James Brown-style funk to lo-fi blues to contemporary Southern soul to collaborations with French house DJ/producer Martin Solveig, Lee Fields has done it all. Particularly his Deep Funk albums set new standards in the 70s when he gave life injections to soul that was about to drift off into insignificance. Today, Lee Fields works on new songs and albums, underlining that is not about reproducing what already exists but to draw from the heart of what music and soul is all about. 

On his latest album It Rains Love, the nuanced soul singer makes a case for people’s ability to love, and for love’s ability to transform people. “Love is the answer,” he sings on the album’s majestic closer. You get the sense he’s not just offering up platitudes. Love is a big idea for Fields. Love, both universal love and romantic love, is a force for the greater human good, Fields explains.

And it is what his life is about: he is married to his wife for 50 years and states that their love grows every day. As an artist, he is still working at the top of his game because “I’m not pretending. I want to sing it in a way that people can feel that I mean what I say. The truth isn’t hard. A lie is hard and people get caught up in lies, but when you’re dealing with the truth, man, it’s easy.” Unfortunately, he sees so much untruth going on and it seems everybody’s always fighting about something. Therefore he is convinced that it is crucial to talk about positive things and to think good thoughts in order to do good deeds. He is just inviting people to open their eyes and think. “It’s all about doing the right thing and trying not to do the bad thing”, he declares, “No one is perfect, you’ll make mistakes, but we’ve got to try to continue to do what’s right.”

The master of modern soul music wants his songs to serve the listener – on stage or on record – and to remind them of the human connections we share. “Everything is moving and we are on one huge spaceship. “Therefore, if we become restless and don’t hold onto love, we’ll be like a ship adrift at sea. If everyone starts fighting, the chances of that ship getting where it’s supposed to get aren’t good. We must care about all the passengers aboard the ship.”

This music is for both dancing and romancing, blending the quiet storm with sweet, understating funk! Get on board!!
