Lust auf einen bärtigen Mann aus Kanada im Holzfällerhemd und seine gleichartige Musik? Der kanadische Prärie-Staat Sas­katchewan scheint ein fruchtbares Fleckchen Erde für interessante Acts zu sein. Neben dem jungen Cash-Wiedergänger Colter Wall und den Bluegrass-Ra­bauken von The Dead South lässt auch die Band Gunner & Smith mit ihren originellen Retro Klängen aufhorchen. Hier heisst zwar niemand Gunner und es handelt sich genauso wenig um ein geniales Duo. Geoff Smith ist einfach ein stoischer Songwriter, der seine Songs mit seiner einfachen, doch treuen Akustikgitarre und seiner kathartischen Stimme verankert – inmitten der Öde einen permanenten Geschmack von Wohligkeit hervorrufend.

Die Musik von Gunner & Smith war seit jeher eine leidenschaftliche Mischung aus sengenden Gitarren, kräftigen Rhythmen und klaren Folk-Familien-Vokalpartien. Die tourgereiften Musiker haben es geschafft, einen sich stets erweiternden Sound hervorzubringen, der Indie Rock, Alt-Country und peppigen Psych-Amerikana zusammenführt.

Seit der Veröffentlichung von He Once Was a Good Man (2014) sind sie mehrmals durch Nordamerika getourt. 2017 haben sie in Saskatoon, umgeben von ländlichen, offenen Ebenen und heruntergekommenen Gebäuden, ihre kultivierte Schwäche für Retro Sounds ungezügelt ausgelebt. So wurde ihr neuestes Album, Byzantium, in knapp zweieinhalb Tagen live und direkt auf analoges Band aufgenommen. Die Ergebnisse klingen weich und satt, die Romantik im Wasserzeichen, geschmeidige Melodien, eingängige Elemente und explodierende Refrains. Der Albumtitel weist auf die endlosen Zyklen von Krieg und Verschwendung hin, die die Menschheit belästigen. Auf Byzantium brodeln die Songs mit einer neuen, grübelnden Energie, die die dunkleren Seiten von Liebe, Verlust und Menschheit betrachtet. Smiths aktuelles Werk existiert in einer öden Welt, wo das Licht letztlich durchscheint.

Ines Brodbeck, wurde in Arlesheim geboren und ist im Baselbiet mit kubanischen Wurzeln und viel Musik aufgewachsen. Nach ihrem Schulabschluss hatte sie drei Jahre in der Landwirtschaft gearbeitet und war bereits im Alter von 20 Jahren auf Reisen. Unter anderem bereiste sie Havanna auf Kuba, dem Herkunftsland ihres verstorbenen Vaters, das sie musikalisch sehr inspiriert hat. Kurz danach war ihr klar, dass ihr Weg der Musik gehört und so hat sie hat sich für ein Musikstudium an der Musik-Akademie Basel, Abteilung Jazz, in Latin-Percussion entschieden.

Seit dem Abschluss ihres Master Studiums 2010 arbeitet sie als selbständige Musikerin und Komponistin. In den letzten Jahren hat sie viel Erfahrung mit verschiedenen Bands und Theaterproduktionen gesammelt. Ihr Debut Album Fiction Folk, erschien 2012 bei dem Süddeutschen Label ‚foxtonesmusic‘.

Any takers for a bearded man from Canada in a lumberjack shirt and his music of the same kind? Because the Canadian Prairie State of Saskatchewan seems to be fertile ground for interesting acts. Besides the young revenant of Johnny Cash, Colter Wall, and the Bluegrass rascals of The Dead South, the band Gunner & Smith makes you prick up your ears with their original retro sounds. However, there is no one called Gunner here nor a genius duo of that name. Geoff Smith is simply a stoic songwriter who anchors his songs with his simple-yet-stalwart acoustic guitar and his cathartic voice, evoking a constant taste of sweetness amidst the bleak.

Hope and redemption. Philosophy and folklore. Mysticism of yesteryear and uncertainty of modern life. The music of Gunner & Smith has always been a collection of fiery elements, blending searing guitars, brawny rhythms and distinct folk-family vocals. The cadre of road-seasoned musicians managed to yield an ever-expanding sound that combines indie rock, alt-country and sizzling psych-Americana.

Since the release of He Once Was a Good Man in 2014, the band has toured across North America numerous times. Their latest release Byzantium was – due to the refined weakness for retro sounds – recorded live off the floor straight to analog tape in a scant two and a half days in Saskatoon, surrounded by rural, open plains and dilapidated buildings in 2017. The resulting sounds are both soft and lush, watermarked with the romance, soft melodies, pop hooks and choral climaxes. The album’s namesake hints at the endless cycles of war and waste that plague humanity. On Byzantium, the songs simmer and seethe with a newfound brooding energy that looks at the darker sides of love, loss and humanity. Smith’s latest offering is one that exists in a barren world where light ultimately shines through.

Supporting act: Inez

Ines Brodbeck grew up in Switzerland with Cuban roots and lots of music. She worked in agriculture for three years after graduation and was already travelling at the tender age of 20 years. Amongst other places she travelled to Havana in Cuba, the home country of her deceased father, where she was tremendously musically inspired her tremendous musical inspiration. Shortly afterwards, she realized that her path is music. She decided to study music at the ‘Musik-Akademie in Basel’, department of Jazz, in Latin-Percussion.

After having graduated with a master’s degree in 2010, she has been working as a self-employed musician and composer. During the last few years she has gained a plethora of experiences with a number of different bands and theatre productions. Her debut album, Fiction Folk, was released in 2012 on the south-German label ‘foxtonesmusic’.
