Einst haben sie die Bühne mit den ganz grossen der US-Underground-Rockszene geteilt, mit "The Ramones", "The B-52s", "The Heartbreakers". Sie haben in den legendärsten Clubs der amerikanischen Ostküste gespielt und die Säle zum Kochen gebracht. Vor dreissig Jahren hat der ebenso legendäre – und leider verstorbene – Atlantis-Wirt Eddie Cassini "The Roustabouts" nach Basel gebracht. Danach räumten sie in Europa ab.

Nun sind sie wieder da! 

Roustabouts: Das sind Handlanger, Deckmatrosen, Zirkusarbeiter, harte, zähe Burschen, die immer unterwegs und sich für keinen Drecksjob zu schade sind. Kein geringerer als Elvis Presley hat diesen Beruf einst besungen. 1979 haben fünf wilde Rocker aus Long Island, New York, diese Berufsbezeichnung als Namen für ihre Band gewählt und mit Karacho losgelegt.

Es dauerte nicht lange, bis sich die wilde Truppe Gehör verschafft hatte. Bereits nach kurzer Zeit wurden sie von Danny Fields gemanagt, der – unter anderem – auch die legendären Underground-Bands «The Ramones», «The MC5» und «The Stooges» unter Vertrag hatte. Dann ging die Post ab: «The Roustabouts» spielten in allen angesagten Clubs und Hallen der US-Ostküste, ihre Konzerte waren hart, schweisstreibend, laut; echter, rauer, fadengerader amerikanischer Rock’n’Roll. Sie wurden eine Stamm-Band in Manhattans stilprägendem Punk Rock-Club «CBGBs». Kurz darauf verliess Setzer die Band. An seiner Stelle übernahm «Mister» Neal Hooper das Gesangsmikrophon.

1987 rockten sie das legendäre Basler Atlantis. Ihre Auftritte am Klosterberg eroberten das Basler Rock-Publikum vor dreissig Jahren im Sturm. Wie ein Tornado fegten sie zunächst über die –tis-Bühne und danach durch die Clubs der Schweiz. Zwei Jahre später waren sie wieder in Basel – und tourten anschliessend durch Deutschland: Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin. Und genau zwei Tage vor dem Mauerfall rockten sie die DDR. Dann fiel die Gang auseinander. Sänger Neal, Bassist Tommy «Boom Boom» Dee, Gitarrist «Loud» Lee Tobia, Drummer «Crazy» Louie Maiello und Gitarrist «The Notorious» Dale Powers gingen fortan getrennte Wege.

Letztes Jahr sind sie mit voller Wucht zurückgekommen, das Publikum im Atlantis tobte. Seither ist die Band wieder da, knüppelhart, gnadenlos. 100 Prozent purer Rock’n’Roll!

"The Roustabouts" from New York: They rock like a hurricane!

They once shared the stage with the giants of the US-underground scene: «The Ramones», «The B-52s», «The Heartbreakers». They played in the most legendary clubs of the East Coast and brought the venues to a boil. They were brought to Basel in 1987 by the legendary – and unfortunately deceased – host of Atlantis, Eddie Cassini. After that, they delighted Europe well into the 1990s with their energetic, hard, sweaty, loud, authentic and raw Rock ‘n’ Roll.

‘Roustabouts’ are unskilled laborers, tough guys, always on the road, never thinking themselves too good for any lousy job. No lesser than Elvis Presley sang about this profession in his song of the same name. In 1979, five wild rockers from Long Island, New York, chose the job title as their band name  and quickly rose up on the New York music scene. Despite varying line-ups,    «The Roustabouts» are considered an American Roots Rock ‘n’ Roll institution for over 35 years.

After countless phone calls, Dale Powers, the band’s guitarist in the 80s and a specialist in repairing American old-timers and motorcycles, succeeded in realizing the little wonder of reuniting them as the “Roustabout Survivors” to carry on that tradition. The reunion presents the original line-up of their legendary album ”Alive in Atlantis” (2017) and tonight they are back here to rock Atlantis again!
